I spent most of my adult life as a practicing alcoholic. Many years of drinking saw me ruin a 27-year military career and lose everything that mattered in my life…...namely, my family. At 52 I felt that nothing or no-one could help me escape the torture of a miserable life
that was centred around alcohol. I could not live with it, and I could not live without it. I have been hospitalized numerous times, and spent two spells in rehab, but I could never resist that first drink. Normally I wouldn`t last a week. People on here have already described Serenity House, and I agree – it is a gorgeous and serene setting in which to undertake recovery.
Chris (my counsellor) has been the catalyst that has enabled me to identify why I could not get the AA programme, and he has given me the tools to continue my life on a daily basis, without the need to pick up a drink.
I liken it to joining a gymnasium. Before you can “go solo” you need someone to show you how the equipment works. In 13 years around AA, I had gone to meetings and read the Big Book, yet I had never properly completed the 12 steps. Another analogy I use is that, before, I was trying to do a jig-saw puzzle without looking at the picture on the box. Once Chris explained exactly how the programme works, all of the pieces fell into place.
Chris has an amazing grasp of the recovery dynamic programme, and a unique way of getting it across.
During my recovery here he guided me through all 12 steps. The Big Book promises that we will be amazed before we are halfway through, if we are rigorous and honest. Well, that promise came true for me. I feel calm and relaxed, and optimistic for the future. I am equipped with the tools that will enable me to live a sober and fulfilling life, providing that I apply all that Chris and AA have taught me.
Chris and Anita are a great team, both have long term sobriety and they are truly committed to helping the suffering addict. The atmosphere at Serenity House is warm and welcoming, and the food and accommodation are superb.
It is a perfect setting in which to begin one’s recovery. Thank you Chris and Anita, you have not only saved my life, you have helped me find a new one that is potentially richer than I could have imagined.
